In 2017 KAGE turns 20

With Christmas fast approaching, it can be hard to find time to stop and contemplate, however, we wanted to share with you some of the highlights from 2016.

We began the year at the seaside performing FORKLIFT at the Bleach* Festival on the Gold Coast. Then it wasn’t long before Gerard hit the road performing PICNIC 17 times throughout Victoria and South Australia. Kate continued developing OUT OF EARSHOT with the ensemble and started creating CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE during a residency in Norway. Between all this, we’ve worked with the GOLDs (senior dancers) in Canberra to create two new works for World Health Day, run workshops for secondary school students, Gerard spent three weeks at OMI Center in New York and we’ve continued to be active contributors to the dance sector.

We have loved mentoring Caroline Meaden, William McBride and Alice Dixon as they created their work for the Abbotsford Convent’s Alchemy program and having Asher Bowen-Saunders as an intern during OUT OF EARSHOT rehearsals.

And the year is not over yet – Gerard is currently in Prague filming a new Dance Film called CLOSED with Jo Strømgren Kompani!

We were overwhelmed by the generosity of our donors this year. A big thank you to all who donated to KAGE and especially to the donor who generously matched our total sum of private donations.

As many of you know, despite the many highs this year we have also had some lows. As we enter 2017 without recurrent Government support we know the next year will be challenging but we are excited about continuing to create two new shows and to celebrate our 20th birthday!

We would also like to send a very fond farewell to our Company Manager Ruth Blythman. Ruth has filled the office with laughter and singing since she started in 2014 and we wish her all the best for her final year of Opera at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music as well as her continuing work with Release Creative. And, we can’t wait to party with her at her upcoming wedding!
